The Hellthiest Foods Around [16]

MELONS! Any guesses why that's the pick of the week? Because most melons contain about 92 percent water! They are all rich in vitamin B6 and potassium. They all are high in soluble fiber, which as you know helps lower bad cholesterol and improves arterial health. Cantaloupe is one of the best sources of beta-carotene [great news if you hate carrots, but please don't hate carrots!]. Watermelon is a great source of lycopene, which can help prevent breast and prostrate cancers, as well as citrulline, an amino acid which helps blood flow to the muscles.

*Psst! see the bottom of the page for a running list of the last 20 foods and here for the book!

This Week's Hellthy Habit:

WATER!

I can't stress the importance of drinking water enough. After all, 60% of your body--and 70% of you brain!--is comprised of water! Even adding one extra glass of water a day helps!

Road Rules!

Looking for clear cut guidelines (red = stop, green = go, etc)?

I think most people fall into the trap of wanting a strict & damn-near impossible set of rules to follow. That's not what this is about. Losing weight & getting healthy are hard enough. When it comes to rules & guidelines, make it easy on yourself:

1. Drink more water.
2. Eat more fruits & veggies.
3. Get more sleep.
4. Move more.
5. Portion control everything that's not a fruit or a veggie, especially anything sweet tasting (even artificial sweeteners!).
6. Move away from processed food.
7. Do it slowly & purposefully.

Remember that you didn't gain all of the weight and bad habits overnight. Give your body time to adjust--and work up slowly, be it veggie intake or hours of sleep you're getting a night. Remember that moving more doesn't have to equal gym time. Make it fun, add it in, go get'em tiger!

Just a Note about Hellthy:

Anyone who has traveled--even briefly--on the road to healthy knows it is neither quick nor easy...and (at least IMHO) it feels a lot more like HELL than HEALTH. Thus I feel that Hellthy is a more accurate description.

For you nay-sayers, pessimists, and punily-challenged, it's not my desire to make hellthy a negative connotation. I hope and ask that you not see it as such either.

Rather, I see (and hopefully you will as well) it as empowering--and a very vivid reminder that HELL is okay, but giving up is NOT!

:)

It All Started When...

when a doctor called me chunky. CHUNKY! I think it was his attempt to politely call me fat that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I realized I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and began looking at diet & exercise to help. While I haven't lost 76lbs in 3 weeks, I am making progress towards my goals and learning that it's a much healthier approach in the long run. More importantly, even when I stray off The Road, I'm still maintaining my lighter weight without gaining. To me, that's almost as exciting as losing weight--almost!--because it gives me hope that when I get to where I want to be, I can stay there permanently!

Through research and personal experience I learned two very important things: 1)smaller gradual changes work the best and 2) nothing motivates me like motivating others.

So here I am putting it all out there--the good, the bad, the ugly in the hopes that perhaps I can motivate you to join me on The Road to Hellthy! :)

South Beach, Atkins, and Grapefruit...Oh My!

Wanting to lose weight and not sure where to turn? The most important question (IMHO) is "can you sustain--REALISTICALLY--this diet for the rest of your life?" If you hate grapefruit, then the Grapefruit Diet is not for you! If you're a vegan, chances are you're going to have a hard time swallowing the Atkins Diet. Do your research. Ask the important questions: how long does the diet plan last? Does it transition you back to the real world? Can living on lemonade & chili powder really provide sustenance for the rest of your life?
